- air mass: a large body of air (can be > 1500km across) with similar T and humidity in every horizontal direction (same altitude)
- moved about by winds aloft
- forms over a large flat area (source region) with only light surface winds (calm)
- ideal source regions: areas with high surface air pressure (e.g. ice- and snow-covered arctic plains in winter, subtropical oceans in summer)
Classification by latitude (arctic/polar/tropical) and surface type (continental/maritime)
- air masses relevant to weather in the U.S.
- cA: continental Arctic; very cold, dry, stable
- cP: continental Polar; cold, dry, stable
- mP: maritime Polar; cool, moist, unstable
- cT: continental Tropical; hot, dry, stable air aloft; unstable surface air
- mT: maritime Tropical; warm, moist; usually unstable
