Syllabus
OBJECTIVES: The format for the research discussion this quarter will be different from past years to facilitate more engaged discussions.
Ideally, we would all meet synchronously, i.e. nobody would attend asynchronously by watching recordings. The purpose of this first-year class and approach is to get to know each other, and to get comfortable with collaborating remotely.
We may change the format as we go along but we will start with the following format::
- We will pre-assign a "short publication" from a journal such as Nature or Science.
- We all read the paper and prepare. We may provide a worksheet with questions
or bullets that you may annotate as you read.
- When we meet online, one of us will briefly introduce the paper, using the paper only, NO Powerpoints! 10 min max. Volunteer presenter arrangements can be made
on short notice before each meeting but perhaps ideally everybody volunteers once.
- We will then break up randomly in little groups of 4-5 people. Groups in every week are different.
- Breakout groups then discuss the paper and fill in the worksheet together. This may be done through Google docs. Groups will have about 30 min.
- We will reconvene for the last 10 min together. To discuss the big outcomes of the paper.
- We will collect the group worksheets.
- Grades will be based on attendance, participation in the breakout groups and the
completion of the worksheets.
