Homeworks

POSTED: 10 July 2025:

Homeworks - Gradescope

There will be a total of 10 problem sets, with one of them being a virtual field trip to the SIO beach (beachwalk). The nine "regular" problem sets will be distributed on Tuesdays. Answers are due the following Tuesday. Sorry, no exceptions for late homeworks.

Students will submit their homeworks through Gradescope. For this, student have to be registered on Gradescope using a course entry code. Please find this code on the grade scale page

Homeworks (and answer sheets) are posted here, as the course progresses.

Code of Conduct

  • discuss your homework with fellow students but write your own homeworks; write your own answers, using your own words!
  • working in groups to share the workload of a homework or field trip assignment violates SIO15 Code of Conduct: e.g. 6 people work on 6 problems together, each does one problem and the others copy the answers; THIS IS CONSIDERED CHEATING!
  • when writing answers using sources other than the class website, provide clear and complete citations (e.g. Newspaper article, website). Points will be taken off, if you do not provide a reference, and answers differ from the class website
  • do not copy and paste from a webpage; THIS IS PLAGIARISM! Use your own words!
  • do not present web material and anybody else's material as your own work
  • do not complete homework for other students
  • copied homeworks will be given 0 points; repeat cheaters will be reported to UCSD
  • the use of AI for homeworks is not permitted; answers obtained from sources other than explicitly given in the homework videos will be considered wrong answers and receive zero points. Putting a homework question into AI tools such as Chat CPT or Google AI may give an answer that is different from that given on the class website and related tools. Double-checking sources and validity of such answers is an undue burden on homework graders, hence such answers will not receive credit.

Help with the homeworks

Videos will help you solve the homework problems. Please access these videos through links in the table below.

Google Earth questions

For some questions in each homework assignment, you need a Google Earth kml or kmz file.
  • If you do not have the free Google Earth package, download it and install it on your computer.
  • Google Earth browser plugins may now allow to open kmk/kmz files that we provide without the need to install Google Earth. But we cannot guarantee that this really works.
  • The homework kml and/or kmz files will be provided below, as the homeworks are assigned. Click on the link to download.
  • Depending on your computer setup, double-clicking on the kmz file may open the WRONG application. In this case, please drag and drop the kmz file specifically on the Google Earth icon
  • When downloading our kml/kmz files, some web browsers may open kml files automatically instead of downloading them. Try "save as" in your browser and then choose a name you like. If there is also a zip file offered, download the zip file instead and unzip it before you open it in Google Earth.

Where can I turn in my homework?

Homeworks are submitted through Gradescope.

Grades

Each of the homeworks will be graded separately. For easier grading, each homework will have a maximum of 20 points. The grade for each homework will be divided by 4 so that a maximum of 5 points will count toward the total cumulative score.
