The area on Earth receiving the highest insolation changes throughout the year! It is the area where the sun is overhead at noon. This is the equator only during spring and fall equinox. At other times, this moves between the Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N) on the date of the northern summer solstice (June 20 or 21) and the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5°S) on the northern winter solstice (i.e. southern summer solstice; December 21 or 22). |
